The first rule you learn in improv is the concept of "yes, and...". It means you have to accept whatever happens (yes) then find a way to build on it (and). By doing this, you allow the scene to go beyond the borders of "usual".
You create space for the unexpected and begin to experience what happens when you work with the mindset of endless possibility.
A concept that started as a foundation as an actor has transformed into a personal core value and influenced my approach as a sales trainer, leader, and entrepreneur.
of experience in sales and business
sales reps and leaders have trained with me
audiences want to work with me again
Mt first stage performance was singing "Girls with Guitars" (a Wynonna Judd classic) at a local talent show when I was eight years old. I spent weeks preparing and practiced until I had every word and dance move memorized. This was - what I thought to be - my big moment!
From that performance forward, I took every opportunity to entertain people: singing at karaoke, performing in school plays, and telling jokes to anyone who would listen. However, it wasn't until high school that I discovered my passion and skill for improv comedy.
While working as a ghost tour guide (I'm serious), I met someone who managed an improv company. He invited me to audition for a spot in the troupe and I joined a few weeks later. It wasn't long until improv became my absolute favorite art form.
When it came time for college, I decided move to New York City after being accepted into The New York Academy for Dramatic Arts. At the academy, I trained professionally in acting and comedy with some of the industries top instructors, performed in shows, worked multiple jobs, and met some incredible people. But after many years of performing (including in an off-broadway production), I found myself facing a health condition that required me to embark on a new career -- a career in sales.
I took my passion, my experience, and an improv mindset and decided to see how far a "yes, and..." would take me.
The rest, as they say, is history. Over the last decade, my professional journey has led to roles as a salesperson, a team leader, an award-winning sales trainer, and an entrepreneur within the worlds of multi-family housing, real estate, event planning, and tech startups.
